Government has marked river bodies and forest reserves as no go areas for mining as it enhances its resolve towards ending galamsey.
Mr. Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources reaffirmed government s determination to end illegal mining, during a meeting with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in Takoradi.
We re at crossroads in our fight against galamsey and so government has put in place interventions to sanitize the small-scale mining sector. The MMDCEs are the heartbeat and fulcrum around which law enforcement can thrive in our fight against galamsey, Mr Jinapor told MMDCEs from mining districts in the Western Region. ....

Local Authorities must constantly engage stakeholders -Dr Ato Arthur


Ing. Dr Nana Ato Arthur, Head of Local Government Service said there is the need for local authorities to constantly engage and dialogue with stakeholders through every available avenue to engender trust and confidence.
He said it was important to draw stakeholders’ attention to the mandate of Regional Coordinating Councils (RCCs) which appears to be very limited, given modern day dynamics of Local government administration.
Dr Ato Arthur said this at the maiden conference of Regional Minister, Regional Chief and Coordinating Directors and Deans’ of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chiefs from the various regions.
The two-day conference, which is on the theme: “Deepening Decentralisation and Local Governance for Accelerated Development in Ghana: The Role of Key Stakeholders,” is to take the participants through Ghana’s Decentralisation policy document and how to achieve the document targeted goals. ....

Respond to warning signals - RCCs urged

The Chief of Staff, Mrs. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, has charged regional coordinating councils (RCCs) to respond promptly to early warning signals and other issues that have the potential to undermine peace and security in their respective regions.
She mentioned chieftaincy and land disputes, illegal mining, armed robbery, invasion of farms by herdsmen and the influx of questionable foreigners as some of the issues of national interest that needed prompt action.
It is expected that regional security coordinating committees (RSCCs) will pursue such matters with urgency to ensure sustained peace, a key ingredient in the march towards the accelerated development of the country, she added. ....

Establish Effective Relations With Local Authorities - Chief Of Staff


 
Madam Akosua Frema-Opare, the Chief of Staff has advised Regional Ministers and Regional Chief Directors to establish and maintain strong and peaceful relations with Chiefs, Opinion and Religious leaders in their various jurisdictions.
She said the peaceful co-existence between government representatives, administrators and traditional authorities in the regions were the easiest way to facilitate development in the areas.
