A record number of detached housing starts are expected to occur in the 12 months to September but this will push demand for detached dwellings beyond supply capacity, according to a report.
The Housing Industry Association’s (HIA)
National Economic and Industry Outlook Report Autumn Edition 2021 has revealed that the number of detached housing commencements will reach a record high of 146,860 in the 12 months to September 2021, representing a 20.3 per cent increase from the peak of the previous boom in 2018.
The report stated that the number of starts in the June and September quarters would remain at near-record peaks of 37,780 and 36,810 respectively, before declining rapidly below 25,000 within a year.

Journalist Patrick Gower has opened up about a condition that has, once again, forced him to undergo emergency surgery on one of his eyes.
Taking to Instagram this evening, the political journalist revealed he s just recently had surgery on his left eye, after his retina detached. I am stoked to say I can still see out of it, but to be honest it has been pretty brutal, Gower wrote.

The total number of dwelling units commenced spiked in the December quarter, driven by a 20-year high in detached house starts, according to data.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released data on building activity for the December 2020 quarter, which showed that the seasonally adjusted estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced rose by 18.6 per cent to 51,055 dwellings.
The ABS attributed this increase to private sector houses, which rose by 26.6 per cent to a 20-year high of 33,761 dwellings.
Private sector other residential dwelling commencements rose by 4.1 per cent to 16,049 dwellings, recovering slightly from a 4.7 per cent fall in the September quarter, it said.
