New Hampshire s GOP legislative majority got right to work after Organization Day, with the Fiscal Committee quickly approving a federal charter school expansion grant the day after the State Board of Education unanimously approved its first Learn Everywhere accredited program. Democrats had successfully blocked both these programs in the previous session, but the new GOP majority wasted no time getting them passed.

Republicans plan to continue that momentum in January with a bill to establish education freedom accounts (EFAs). Similar bills narrowly failed in the 17- 18 biennium, during which the NHGOP had a larger majority than they do today.

Gov. Chris Sununu was right to call out Republican legislators for ignoring the seriousness of COVID-19, leading to the unfortunate death of Speaker Dick Hinch. But he didn’t go far enough nor acknowledge his own contributions to what has become a very dangerous approach to dealing with a whole host of problems facing our state. “Live Free or Die” may have been an uplifting sentiment for General Stark and his followers in the early 1800s. It has no place in the 21st century, however, as it has been interpreted recently in Concord. Unfortunately, too many people have elevated this phrase into some kind of political imperative that reads, when placed into practice, “It’s every man for himself.”
