New rules in works to stop drones from harassing birds

SALEM, Ore. — If you’re a black oystercatcher sitting on a nest of eggs, there is good reason to be concerned if a large, buzzing object flies directly at you.
Even if the object is just a drone, the small blackish birds with reddish-orange bills often scatter in fear, worried that the unmanned aircraft is actually a predator such as a bald eagle or falcon.
The scenario has become increasingly common over the past two years at the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge, the islands just off the coast that are critical for nesting shorebirds but also make for scenic drone videos.

Every year on the third Monday of January, we celebrate the life, work, and sacrifice of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is widely known that Dr. King fought for a day when America would be a country of equals—when we would be judged by our merits, no matter the color of our skin, the religion we profess, or the place we were born.
The power of Dr. King’s words and the beauty of his dream are often the focus on this day. The phrase “I have a dream” is recognized by millions of Americans. Because Dr. King was one of the great orators of the 20th century, there is a tendency to focus on his inspirational quotes and powerful messages. But if we are truly to honor his legacy, particularly in these tumultuous times, we must go further. We are called to act. We must live the teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Denali: Artists Respond to Music Inspired by Wilderness opens in the Rozsa Gallery and virtually | News, Sports, Jobs

Michigan Technological University
HOUGHTON – The Department of Visual and Performing Arts and the Rozsa Center are pleased to announce Denali: Artists Respond to Music Inspired by Wilderness, an exciting collaboration culminating in both a Rozsa Gallery A-Space exhibit “Denali: Artists Respond to Music Inspired by Wilderness,” and a virtual event, “Denali: Music and Art Inspired by Wilderness,” featuring composers and artists, their music, and the art inspired by it.
Denali: Artists Respond to Music Inspired by Wilderness exists in the confluence of two languages–music and visual art. It features 18 works of art made in response to original chamber music inspired by composers’ experiences in Denali National Park, in central Alaska. The in-person gallery experience opens in the Rozsa Gallery A-Space on Friday, Jan. 22, and both the live and virtual events will be available through Saturday, April 17. Gallery hours are: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and 1 to 8 p.m. on Saturdays. The Denali virtual event can be streamed anytime Friday, Jan. 22 to Saturday, April 17, by visiting the Rozsa website at mtu.edu/rozsa. QR codes, posted with each work of art throughout the gallery exhibit, provide links to the related pieces of music by scanning with a QR code reader on a smartphone. Musical scores, program notes, artist statements, and biographies of all project participants will be available both inside the gallery exhibit and digitally as part of the virtual experience.
