Chris Campanelli may be one step closer to becoming Erie County s top cop. The 52-year-old Democrat and sheriff s captain, who ran on improving deputy training and resourcing, appeared to clinch his party s nomination Tuesday night for sheriff, edging out Democratic rival and deputy sheriff Anthony Sanfilippo by more than 4,800 votes. As of 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, unofficial results showed Campanelli with 12,973 votes and Sanfilippo with 8,089 votes. If the results hold up, Campanelli will face off against Republican Brian Shank, the sole GOP candidate vying for sheriff in the Nov. 2 General Election. The winner will succeed Sheriff John Loomis, a Democrat, who announced earlier this year that he wouldn t seek a third term. ....
