YOUNGSTOWN Larry Ellis, president of Youngstown City School s union, will resign effective May 31, according to a Youngstown Education Association news release. According to the Thursday night news release, YEA s treasurer noticed discrepancies that appear to be the result of a failure to follow the appropriate accounting procedures for expenditures related to the executive of Larry Ellis regular duties as YEA president. YEA has initiated an audit, the release said. Mr. Ellis has been cooperative in the financial review and has agreed to step back from his leadership duties, resigning effective May 31, 2021 as YEA president to return to the classroom full-time, the news release said, adding YEA expects proper accountability for expenditures at all levels of the organization and has taken steps to prevent any future issues. ....
For the 15th straight day, the state of Ohio reported fewer than 2,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday. There are 1,074,019 cases, an increase of 1,707 from Friday, according to the Ohio Department of Health. Locally, the Mahoning Valley saw 76 new cases Saturday. Trumbull County now has 15,922 cases, an increase of 24 from Friday. In Mahoning County, there are 39 new cases, bringing the total to 21,315. Columbiana County has 8,707 cases, up 13 from Friday. There are 14,931 presumed recovered and 463 deaths in Trumbull County. Mahoning County has 20,086 presumed recovered and 585 deaths. Columbiana County has 8,262 presumed recovered 229 deaths. The ODH provides updated death numbers only on Tuesdays and Fridays. ....

The state had 54,746 COVID-19 cases in April, up from 50,144 reported in March. It reversed a trend of three straight months of decline since the virus peak of 279,317 cases reported in December. The number of reported cases in January was 195,142 and 71,630 in February. There were 205,366 cases reported in November, 61,710 in October, 30,830 in September, 31,998 in August and 39,370 in July. Ohio reported 16,276 cases in June, 17,486 in May and 15,828 last April. The pandemic started in early March 2020 with 2,199 cases reported that month in the state. ....
