Seattle Independent Bookstore Day Is Back for 2021
The local seller celebration retains its book passport but is now both virtual and IRL, and runs for 10 days.

Madison Books is one of the stores participating in this year's altered Independent Bookstore Day.
This year Seattle Independent Bookstore Day is a “day” in the way that Seattle Restaurant Week is a week—not even slightly. The annual celebration of indie sellers was mostly canceled last year (pandemic). This year (still pandemic) it’s spread across 10 days (April 24–May 3) and straddles online and brick and mortar—all to make the typical tsunami of book people more of a gently lapping tide.

Buoyed by strong holiday sales and an unprecedented consumer shift to online ordering, independent bookstores have weathered more than 10 months of the Covid pandemic, with some even posting sales gains in 2020. But
PW’s ongoing survey of store owners and managers found that many remain concerned about the government’s response to the pandemic and the continuing uncertainty about the health of the economy.
The 25 independent bookstores who participated in the survey had widely varying sales results last year, with one store reporting a 50% sales increase over 2019 and another citing a 43% decline. Ten stores reported sales declines of 10%–35% compared with the previous year. Nine stores hovered between declines of 10% and gains of 10%. While those numbers would not be encouraging in other years, the declines were less drastic than some predicted back in spring.

A Guide to Seattle's Independent Bookstores

Pioneer Square’s Arundel Books is affiliated with the small press Chatwin Books. Currently, Arundel sits in a proper brick building and abounds with new, used, and rare books, many of which you need to get on a ladder to reach. In January, it moves to a new location.
Online and in-store
This shop is a Pioneer Square mainstay for new and used books. As of January 31, 2021, though, it will move to a new spot on University Way NE. In the interim, the Pioneer Square location is open, or you can order by email at [email protected].
