Former Jamaica coach Junior Bennett believes the inclusion of ace all-rounder Andre Russell in the West Indies squad for upcoming Twenty20 matches is a major boost as the regional side looks to mould a group for the World Cup in India later this year.On the other hand, Bennett, who is Jamaica cricket’s chief selector, said the absence of star spinner Sunil Narine virtually rules out any chance of the Trinidadian making the cut for the global T20 cricket showpiece.

THE BAD news is that on the ratings schedule in the T20 format, the West Indies (WI) T20 team lies 10th of the top 12 international cricket teams in the world.
The good news is that they have 15 matches at home between June and August to correct this imbalance. The opposition, in order of challenge, is South Africa, Australia and Pakistan.
For an idea of where we stand, all three of the above are ahead of us. Ireland, the newest kids on the block, lie behind; and so does Zimbabwe. Interestingly, ahead of WI are Bangladesh at ninth and Afghanistan at seventh. Sri Lanka are eighth but were defeated 2-1 by WI in a three-match series very recently in Antigua, although not convincingly.

LAHORE, Pakistan – Shimron Hetmyer’s gradual isolation from Test cricket continued Saturday when he was signed by Multans Sultans for next month’s continuation of the Pakistan Super League.
The left-hander, along with T20 World Cup winner, Johnson Charles, was picked up by the franchise in a replacement draft staged online earlier this week.
Hetmyer was one of several West Indies players who returned to the Caribbean earlier this month after the lucrative Indian Premier League was suspended due to the country’s COVID-19 crisis.
Significantly, the Guyanese was not included in a 30-man squad selected to participate in a three-week high performance camp in St Lucia, in preparation for the two-Test series against South Africa bowling off June 10 in the Caribbean island.

Jamaica allrounder Andre Russell is back in the West Indies T20I squad for the first time since March 2020. The 33-year-old Russell was on Tuesday named in a provisional 18-man squad for the back-to-back five-match home series against South Africa, Australia, and Pakistan.
Also returning to the squad are Jamaican fast bowlers Sheldon Cottrell and Oshane Thomas along with batsman Shimron Hetmyer of Guyana and fast bowler Antiguan-American Hayden Walsh Jnr., with Kieron Pollard continuing to lead the side following on from the 2-1 home win against Sri Lanka in the format in March.
Explosive Jamaican opening batsman Chris Gayle is also in the squad. The 41-year-old Gayle was a part of the squad that triumphed in the series against Sri Lanka.

Sheldon Cottrell, Shimron Hetmyer, Andre Russell, Oshane Thomas, and Hayden Walsh Jr. return alongside the majority of the squad who featured in the 2-1 T20I series victory against Sri Lanka in March. These upcoming T20Is are crucial in terms of our preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup.
