Civil rights leader Robert "Bob" Moses, a soft-spoken and self-effacing grassroots organizer who championed Black voting rights, died on Sunday at age 86.
Born and raised in Harlem, N.Y., Moses went to the South to join the nascent fight for civil rights in the early 1960s, ultimately becoming a central figure in the movement.
As a leader in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in deeply segregated Mississippi, Moses worked to hand political power to Black people through voting education and voter registration drives. He continued to push education to the forefront of the civil rights agenda when in the '80s he founded the Algebra Project, a math training program focused on empowering students from underfunded public schools and poor communities.

Lanier High School receives $10K donation from a Class of 2001 graduate

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – On Friday, the principal of Jackson’s Lanier High School received a special surprise. Instead of receiving supplies, she was presented with a $10,000 check from a Class of 2001 graduate.
Anitra Bender is the creator of “Amazoning With Anitra,” a couponing group that works with Amazon vendors nationwide. Just a few weeks ago, she hosted a pop-up shop with hundreds of vendors at the Mississippi Trademart. Some of those proceeds from the event were used for the donation.
Principal Dr. Valerie Bradley said she loves seeing the community come together for the students.

MLB Draft Preview: What Direction Might The Texas Rangers Go At No. 2 Overall? - Sports Illustrated Texas Rangers News, Analysis and More

Jul 8, 2021
ARLINGTON, Texas — It's not very often the Texas Rangers have the No. 2 pick in the MLB Draft. The last time the franchise picked that high was in 1974 when they selected Tommy Boggs, a prep pitcher out of Lanier High School in Austin, Texas.
Boggs had a nine-year Major League career—only three spent with the Rangers—and finished with a career record of 20-44 with a 4.22 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. Pretty underwhelming for a second overall pick.
That's what the Rangers are trying to avoid this year. Another pick gone awry.
Of course, the current regime of president of baseball operations Jon Daniels, general manager and executive vice president Chris Young, and senior director of amateur scouting Kip Fagg aren't responsible for Boggs. And while Young is a very recent addition to the front office, the Rangers don't have the greatest track record when it comes to first round picks since Daniels began overseeing the club's baseball operations in late 2005.
