National Fitness Campaign bringing outdoor fitness court to St Lucie County

ST. LUCIE COUNTY The Lawnwood Softball Complex will be named in memory of Layne Chesney, a Fort Pierce teen who tragically died in 2019. Chesney was a standout shortstop for Lincoln Park Academy. Dozens of her teammates and others spoke to the County Commission Tuesday about the mark that the late teen left within the community.  In her short, but precious year walking on this earth, Layne impacted the world around her; leading by example, laughing out loud and teasing her teammates that are standing right here behind us, said Fort Pierce City Commissioner Jeremiah Johnson, who petitioned the county to name the field after Chesney.

Chesney was 14 years old when she threw gasoline on a bonfire on New Year s Eve in 2017, causing burns to more than 90% of her body. She died 17 months later in May of 2019. Fort Pierce City Commissioner Jeremiah Johnson wants to have the softball fields at the Lawnwood Sports Complex named after Layne Chesney.
