Western North Carolina: Emergency COVID-19 field hospital set up

As North Carolina continues to break its own COVID-19 records, hospital workers have been feeling extra pressure to keep up with the growing number of patients. Recognizing it needed help, Caldwell Memorial Hospital, along with several other nearby facilities, reached out to the Christian organization Samaritan's Purse. Throughout the pandemic, the international relief group set up emergency field hospitals in Italy, New York City and the Bahamas. This is only the second field hospital that the group has set up in the U.S. The group announced a third will be set up in California on Sunday night.Medical Director Erin Holzhauer said with each unit they set up, their disaster specialists have learned more about fighting the virus and how to better take care of their patients."These patients are going to receive top-level care," Holzhauer said, standing outside the newly set-up tents in Lenoir. "We're hoping that we got here just in time to be able to relieve some pressure and keep these hospitals from overflowing."She said Samaritan's Purse had been contacted by a lot of other hospitals and she anticipates another deployment being needed. In the meantime, the current mobile hospital has 30 beds for non-ICU patients, which they started filling on Thursday. "It's amazing what one to two beds on a unit can provide," Holzhauer said. "Even the first eight patients have already started to alleviate the pressure in the local hospital."Recently, the North Carolina Nurse's Association (NCNA) called on Governor Roy Cooper to implement more statewide restrictions to ease the pressure on hospital workers."Hospitals and other healthcare facilities are facing dire staffing shortages," The NCNA president and CEO said in a letter sent to the governor. "If North Carolina does not take drastic action, we will face a crisis that none of us want to consider, including being overworked, understaffed, and unable to properly care for our fellow citizens."So far, the governor has not responded to the association's requests. In the meantime, Samaritan's Purse's 46 disaster specialists plan to continue helping North Carolina hospitals from their mobile unit in Lenoir.Holzhauer said future deployments depend on case counts, as well as hospitalization capacity and staffing.
