UIHC will continue to push for new North Liberty facility

02/25/21 University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics administrators say they will continue to push for a new North Liberty hospital despite being thwarted in their first effort for approval from the state. The Daily Iowan reports that during an hour-long presentation before the State Board of Regents, Vice President for Medical Affairs Brooks Jackson said the University of Iowa is still pursing the project. He called the State Health Council’s narrow 3-2 vote against the facility disappointing, but not unexpected. The application was for a $230 million four-story facility which would include up to 36 inpatient rooms, up to 16 operating rooms, and an ER. It has been opposed by private health care givers like Mercy Iowa City and Unity Point Health, who believe such a facility could spell the eventual end of their business.

University of Iowa Health Care optimistic about new North Liberty hospital, despite state rejection

IOWA CITY One week after a state council narrowly denied a University of Iowa Health Care application to build a new $230 million hospital in North Liberty, UI Vice President for Medical Affairs Brooks Jackson said the hiccup wasn’t surprising and he expects the project eventually will materialize. “The outcome, while disappointing, is not unexpected,” Jackson told the Board of Regents on Wednesday. “Those of you who may be familiar with the Iowa certificate-of-need process know that it is not uncommon for a project of this significance to require more than one hearing before receiving approval.” Despite fervent opposition from regional community hospitals and health care providers to the proposed 300,000-square-foot UIHC expansion planned for 60 acres at the southwest corner of Highway 965 and Forevergreen Road, Jackson described the planned facility “as a vital extension of our academic medical center in a community setting that is centered on the patient.”
