Political Parties Step Up Campaign Mode

It was a hectic and interesting last weekend, as the island’s two main political rivalries stepped up the momentum in anticipation for the upcoming general elections.
While the ruling United Workers Party (UWP) celebrated its fifth-year anniversary victory at the 2016 polls; the opposition St Lucia Labour Party (SLP) rallied support in its concerted efforts to oust the current administration.
Party flags and supporters decked in ‘party colours’ lined the respective routes with the UWP’s ‘motorcade celebration’ picking up steam , whilst the SLP’s ‘Pan Sunday’ protests was audibly displayed along the way.
Industrial Dispute Averted

Health authorities and union representatives appear to have averted a likely industrial dispute involving health workers in the south of the island.
Over the past years, employees at the St Jude Hospital have complained about poor working conditions and suitable payment for their services.
This ‘long-standing issue’ reached fever pitch about two weeks ago, when some staffers took to the media to air out their grievances. And only last week, the kitchen staff at the southern health institution staged a ‘sick out’, which resulted in patients not receiving their daily breakfast menu for a day.

WHILE legislators here agree that a cohesive approach is needed to combat the Covid-19 virus, there are still some debilitating factors to be addressed as the country steps up its fight.
According to latest reports, the pandemic has claimed close to 3.3 million lives worldwide amidst a ‘devastating outbreak’ in India, recently.
Though Britain has recorded the highest death toll in Europe, however its successful vaccination programme has allowed the authorities to start relaxing curbs. Several other European countries have followed suit and have begun easing restrictions.
