Hanover boys tennis (5-2) won its third straight match, this time a 6-3 overtaking of Alvirne on the road. HHS went 5-1 in singles matches. Junior Evan Yang (8-3), junior Kevin Pillsbury (8-5), sophomore Zhiwen Liu (8-2), senior Alex Stevens (8-3), and junior Charlie Birkmeyer (8-0) emerged victorious. Hanover head coach Jarrod Shaheen spoke highly of Alvirne’s sportsmanship before praising his team’s performance. “Evan had no trouble taking a win at the top of the ladder, and Kevin played a hard-fought match that was back and forth until he pulled away at the end. His hustle was incredible,” Hanover head coach Jarrod Shaheen said. “Zhiwen, Alex S., and Charlie rounded out very nice performances down the ladder to clinch the win. At doubles, Alex S. and Kevin played a phenomenal match against an athletic team to eke it out in the end.”

Local roundup: Windsor boys stun previously unbeaten Rutland Staff Reports Modified: 3/15/2021 7:34:52 PM WINDSOR Owen Abrahamsen had 20 points to help the VPA Division III Windsor High boys basketball team stun previously unbeaten D-I Rutland, 55-50, on Saturday afternoon. The Yellowjackets took command in the second quarter with a 17-2 run to build a 29-17 lead at halftime. Rutland chipped away from there, rallying to tie the game at 50-50 with 51 seconds left in the fourth. Windsor made the key plays in the final minute to secure the win. Jordan Place hit a pair of clutch free throws with 13.8 seconds to play to give the hosts a 53-50 lead. After Rutland had to foul again soon after, John Cook stepped to the line to make two of his own to give the hosts an insurmountable 55-50 lead.

Grace Bazin, Emma Bazin and Izzy Stack BFUHS students all scored in the final eight minutes of regulation to lead the Hurricanes to a 3-1 win over Burr & Burton at Wendell A. Barwood Arena. With the help from part of its VPA member-to-member roster, Hartford (4-4-0) matched its win total from the last three seasons combined.
