OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan provides humanitarian aid to Uzbek labour migrants abroad

On 5 February, the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan (PCUz), John MacGregor handed over personal protection equipment and humanitarian aid to the Deputy Director of the Agency for External Labour Migration under the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Hojiakbar Fayzullahodjayev.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Uzbek labour migrants in Kazakhstan and in the Russian Federation found themselves in difficult situations due to layoffs and having to take unpaid leave.
The assistance is aimed to help migrants, who have fallen on hard times because of the pandemic. Aid included protection masks, gloves, mugs and bags as well as personal hygiene products, detergents and antibacterial agents.

According to the Agency for External Labor Migration, the Fund will be formed from additional sources of the local budget and other funds not prohibited by law.
The Fund provides services to migrant workers in difficult situations abroad in the following areas:
• offering vacancies available in foreign companies;
• payment of air or rail tickets for repatriation;
• providing money of up to $1,000 and a ticket for bringing the body of the deceased to Uzbekistan.
It is noted that today such Funds have been established under the khokimiyats of Karakalpakstan, Surkhandarya, Namangan, Khorezm and Syrdarya regions.

THE OBSERVANCE OF THE INTERNATIONAL MIGRANTS DAY IN CENTRAL ASIA
IOM Kazakhstan has launched a week-long information marathon. Representatives of the non-governmental sector in the cities of Nur-Sultan, Almaty, Aktau and Karaganda, carried out activities among the population in cooperation with city Akimats, police departments and other partner organizations.
IOM signed a Memorandum on Cooperation on Migration in Kazakhstan. In the framework of the Memorandum between the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and IOM, research, trainings on international migration issues, as well as the preparation of educational materials and trainings of civil servants from the southern and northern regions of the country will be carried out in Kazakhstan.
