Joint media release: The Hon Alatoi Ishmael Kalsakau, Deputy Prime Minsiter, Minister of Internal Affairs, Republic of Vanuatu
Construction has commenced in Port Vila under the Cook and Tiroas Barracks Redevelopment project, a joint initiative of the Governments of Australia and Vanuatu.
The large-scale infrastructure partnership will deliver enhanced resilient facilities at Cook and Tiroas Barracks to support the Vanuatu Police Force’s growth and capability development.
Upgrades at Cook Barracks will include engineer and vehicle workshops, accommodation and training facilities, essential services and a medical centre.
There was no car accident, nor death reported in Port Vila or Efate during the Christmas festivities, according to the office of the Commissioner of Police.
Seven people were apprehended and detained by police for drunken behavior and public disturbances, while fifteen vehicles were confiscated for non-compliance with vehicle roadworthiness regulations and eight vehicles were confiscated because the drivers were under the influence of alcohol.
Police checkpoints, set up at strategic points, around Port Vila, and Efate over the Christmas period, saw drivers moving out of the city or into the city, were stopped and checked.
This resulted in vehicles confiscated for drunkenness, or non-compliance with roadworthiness. Police say these were part of the operations for the safety of everyone.
