With fewer than four weeks left in the school in the school year, School District 51 is dealing with another COVID-19 outbreak. First there was Shelledy Elementary, 353 N. Mesa St., which is in virtual learning this week after 13 confirmed cases. Now, Rocky Mountain Elementary, 3260 D 1/2 Road, has joined the Mesa County outbreak list with five confirmed cases in a third-grade class. That entire class of 13 students is now quarantined, the district said. âWe had five students who tested positive, so we quarantined the entire classroom,â said Emily Shockley, spokesperson for District 51. âWeâve had quarantines in the past but this is a little different because the entire class is quarantined. Shelledy Elementary, at 353 N. Mesa St. in Fruita, is going to remote learning for at least the upcoming week because of a rise in COVID-19 cases, Principal Cami Kidd announced in a Saturday letter to parents. âWe are waiting to hear from Mesa County Public Health whether we will need to remain in remote learning past the end of this week. We will notify you as soon as we have that information,â Kidd wrote. âWe have been preparing for this situation from the beginning of the school year, and our staff are ready to support our learning community during this time.
