Carolyn M. Kirby NEWPORT NEWS Carolyn M. Kirby, 67, passed away Thursday, March 4, 2021. Carolyn was committed to caring for animals and worked as a veterinary assistant at Boulevard Veterinary Hospital for over 30 years. She loved her animals deeply, most recently, her two Shih Tzus, Chloe and Brie. Carolyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas Lee Kirby; mother and father, Hazel and George Lay; and sister, Helen Gibson. She is survived by her only son and loving daughter (in-law), Thomas and Angela; granddaughter, Kendall, who was her pride and joy; sisters, Ann (Pete), Georgia, and Frances (Rick); countless nieces and nephews; and a host of close friends.

Ronnie André Chandler Sr. NEWPORT NEWS The sun rose on Ronnie André Chandler Sr., 59, on Dec. 7, 1961, and sadly set Monday, Dec. 21, 2020. He was born in Hampton to Thelma Rosser Taylor and the late Arlington Thomas Chandler Jr. “Raulo,” as he was affectionately known by his siblings, was raised in Newport News and attended Newport News Public Schools and the American School of Isfahan in Iran. During his time there, he dedicated his life to the Lord at the age of 15. He graduated from Denbigh High School and continued his education at Norfolk State University for two years. Ronnie enlisted in the U.S. Army for two years, serving in Nuremberg, Germany. He later owned and operated a cleaning service business and was later employed by Diamond Resorts, where he was employed at the time of his death.

Billy Joe ‘B.J.’ Roberts HAMPTON Sheriff Billy Joe “B.J.” Roberts, 70, peacefully departed this life Saturday, Dec. 26, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earnest and Viola Roberts; and sister, Nora Barnwell. A native of South Carolina, Sheriff Roberts was educated in Hampton and earned his high school diploma from Phenix High School. During his high school years, he played football and basketball, and later earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management from Hampton University. He completed the Northwestern University Public Safety Management School in Illinois, the National Sheriffs’ Institute (NSI) program in Colorado, the Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute Chief Executive Training Program and Civic Leadership Institute.
