Second review group approves Janssen's COVID-19 vaccineNews

Thursday's review by the Central Pharmaceutical Advisory Committee is the second of three reviews.
"We went through the data of Janssen's COVID-19 vaccine and discussed its safety and efficacy. After consideration, we saw its preventive effect and we advise the authorization of this vaccine."
Based on the clinical data, the review panel has confirmed that for people over the age of 18, the prevention effect 14 and 28 days after one shot was both over 66 percent.
That's above the 50 percent prevention effect that the World Health Organization has set.
The panel of experts says it's safe as the adverse reactions were within the safe boundary.

European Medicines Agency 'firmly convinced' that benefits of AstraZeneca vaccine outweigh risksNews

According to the head of the European Medicines Agency Tuesday, health regulators remain "firmly convinced" that the benefits of Astrazeneca's COVID-19 vaccines outweigh the potential risks.
"While the investigation is ongoing, currently, we are still firmly convinced that the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine in preventing COVID-19, with its associated risk of hospitalization and death, outweigh the risks of these side effects."
The remarks come as number of European countries have halted use of the AstraZeneca vaccine, amid concerns the shots caused blood clots in some recipients.
However, the official shot down those concerns, saying there was "no indication" the vaccine caused such adverse side effects.

No. of people employed in S. Korea in February declines y/y for 12th month in a row

As the employment crisis from the pandemic continues, South Korea is seeing its worst job numbers in more than 20 years.
According to data released by Statistics Korea on Wednesday, about 26.3 million people were in employment last month 473-thousand fewer than the same period the previous year.
This is the twelfth month in a row that employment has fallen the longest period of decline since April 1999.
The situation was slightly better than the previous month when the number of people employed fell by nearly one-million on-year.
"Compared to January, there was a smaller decline in the number of people employed in February especially in the face-to-face service sectors, as social distancing measures were eased starting February 15th."

S. Korea's third round of pandemic relief now 97% paid outNews

South Korea is now making the final payments to people eligible for the third round of relief funds that started in January.
The finance ministry on Tuesday specified the number of people who've got them and how much money's been paid in total.
"As of March 15th, 4.4 trillion won has been paid out to 3-million-655-thousand people. This is a completion rate of about 96.6 percent.
That's around 3.9 billion U.S. dollars.
By sector, the payments went to more than 2.8 million small business owners, or around 97 percent of those eligible, and the 681-thousand freelancers and contract workers have ALL been paid.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin landed at Osan Air Base a few hours ago.
They are the first Cabinet-level officials to visit Seoul since President Biden took office.
In about at hour or so, Blinken will be meeting with his South Korean counterpart Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong.
We also hear that Austin is now meeting his own South Korean counterpart, Defense Minister Suh Wook.

Worst sandstorm in China blankets Beijing sky with orange muck

The worst sandstorm in nearly a decade swept over the Chinese Capital on Mondayturning the skies an eerie shade of orange.
Skyscrapers in the center of Beijing nearly disappeared from sight amid the dust and sandand more than four-hundred flights were cancelled.
Traffic was also chaotic.
Due to the poor visibilitydrivers had to turn on their headlights even in the middle of the day.
The air quality index was reported as "hazardous" with pollutant levels 25 times higher than what's considered safe and some 21 million residents were advised to stay indoors.

Less than a hour ago South Korea's health authorities announced new special prevention measures that will be imposed in the capital area from Wednesday.
This announcement comes after the nation's daily COVID-19 cases has been staying between 300s and 400s for a while but the government is hoping to lower the cases below the 200 mark.

'Minari' earns six Oscar nominations, including Best Supporting Actress for Youn Yuh-jungNews

A film about a Korean-American immigrant family "Minari" is looking like a strong contender at this year's Academy Awards.
On Monday local time, director Lee Isaac Chung's movie received six Oscar nominations including 'Best Picture' and 'Best Supporting Actress'.
Experts say it wasn't such a surprise given the film has shown the same momentum as Bong Joon-ho's Oscar-winning 'Parasite' garnering more than 90 awards and countless nominations already.
