Detailed description is Der Alte Südfriedhof – bekannter unter dem Namen Alter Südlicher Friedhof – in München wurde 1563 als Pestfriedhof „ferterer Freithof“ (=äußerer Friedhof) vor den Toren der Stadt auf Veranlassung von Herzog Albrecht V. angelegt. Er liegt einige hundert Meter südlich des Sendlinger Tors zwischen Thalkirchner Straße im Westen und Pestalozzistraße im Osten, bei einer maximalen Breite von 180 Metern. Nördliche und südliche Begrenzung sind Stephansplatz und Kapuzinerstraße, eine Distanz von 720 Metern. Die Flächenausdehnung beträgt knapp zehn Hektar. Er war von 1788 bis 1868, also 80 Jahre lang, die einzige und allgemeine Begräbnisstätte für die Toten aus dem gesamten Stadtgebiet, weshalb hier die Gräber einer ganzen Reihe prominenter Münchner zu finden sind.StellenrangDer älteste noch erhaltene Münchner Zentralfriedhof bietet einen „Querschnitt durch das kulturelle, geistige und wirtschaftliche Leben. Eine wahrhaft große Zeit spiegelt sich hier.“GeschichteminiWährend der Pest des Jahres 1563 reichten die in München vorhandenen Gottesäcker nicht mehr aus. „Man mußte deshalb vor dem Sendlinger Tor einen neuen Friedhof – wegen seiner Lage außerhalb der Stadt, der Fertere, der Äußere Freidhof genannt – anlegen.“Als 1632 die Schweden anrückten, wurde das 1576 erbaute hölzerne Salvatorkirchlein abgerissen und die Friedhofsmauer geschleift, um diesen keine Möglichkeit zu geben sich zu verschanzen. 1674 wurde als Ersatz für das Kirchlein die Stephanskirche geweiht. Auf dem Friedhof wurden 1705/06 in mehreren Massengräbern 682 Leichen von Opfern der Sendlinger Mordweihnacht begraben.
