He was in jail for 19 months during emergency of 1975-77 under MISA. He raised voice against injustice and led many farmers agitation. Mishra was state president of Janata Dal United Chhattisgarh earlier. He was actively involved in separate Chhattisgarh state movement during 1992 till 2000.
