Als Dachorganisation vertritt die aej die Interessen der Evangelischen Jugend auf Bundesebene gegenüber Bundesministerien, gesamtkirchlichen Zusammenschlüssen, Fachorganisationen und internationalen Partnern. Ihre derzeit 33 Mitglieder sind bundeszentrale evangelische Jugendverbände und Jugendwerke, Jugendwerke evangelischer Freikirchen und die Kinder- und Jugendarbeit der Mitgliedskirchen der Evangelischen Kirche in Deutschland (EKD). Acht evangelische oder ökumenische Verbände, Einrichtungen und Fachorganisationen sind als außerordentliche Mitglieder angeschlossen.
