Detailed description is We are the Arecibo Observatory Space Academy (AOSA), a pre-college program at the Arecibo Observatory fostering science by inquiry based learning. The Arecibo Observatory Space Academy (AOSA) is a semester-long, pre-college research program for high school students in Puerto Rico. Our mission is to prepare students for academic and professional careers by allowing them to receive an independent and collaborative research experience on topics related to space and aid in their individual academic and social development. Our objectives are to (1) Supplement the student’s STEM education via inquiry-based learning and indirect teaching methods, (2) Immerse students in an ESL environment, further developing their verbal and written presentation skills, and (3) To foster in every student an interest in science by harnessing their natural curiosity and knowledge in order to further develop their critical thinking and investigation skills. . Each Fall and Spring semester, selected high school students from all over Puerto Rico participate in this academy on Saturdays where they receive experience designing, proposing, and carrying out research projects related to space exploration. Students get the opportunity to explore their topic of choice while practicing many of the foundations of scientific research.
