Detailed description is Arnsberg in Westfalen Den Ursprung der eigentlichen Stadt finden wir zweifellos im alten Schloss. Sicherlich werden nun einige sagen: „ Ups, da war doch noch die Rüdenburg, gegenüber dem Schloss, und diese ist älter“. Ja, stimmt, aber die Stadt wurde ausgehend vom alten Schloss errichtet und erweitert.. . Die Rüdenburg wird erstmals im 11. Jahrhundert erwähnt, also zu der Zeit, wo sie durch den Grafen von Werl auf dem Rüdenberg erbaut wurde. Leider existiert heute nicht mehr viel von der ehemals recht großen Burg. Zwar wurden verschiedene Teile vor einigen Jahren wieder freigelegt, jedoch gibt es nicht mehr allzu viel. Vielleicht scheitert die weitere Freilegung auch an den finanziellen Mitteln.. . Zurück zum Schloss, welches wenige Jahre später (um 1100) erbaut wurde.. . Erstmalig wird dieses Schloss des Grafen Konrad im Jahre 1102 erwähnt, wohl auch nur, weil sie in dem Jahre gleich mal wieder zerstört wurde. Verantwortlich hierfür war Erzbischof Friedrich I. von Köln. Selbiger hatte sich in Zeiten eines Krieges Heinrich dem IV. zugeordnet gefühlt und in dem Schloss des Grafen Konrad eine Gefahr gesehen.. . Das alles jedoch tat der Sache keinen Abbruch. Die Grafen entschieden sich für Arnsberg, und wurden fortan «Grafen von Arnsberg» genannt. Dies führte unweigerlich dazu, dass etwa um 1114 ca. 15 Familien sich dem Arnsberger Grafen unterordneten und unterhalb des Schlosses begannen, die heutige Altstadt zu bauen. Nun begann man auch die «Stadt» zu befestigen, wobei der heutige Glockenturm das Haupttor zur Stadt bildete.. . Jetzt wurde die Stadt natürlich wieder für andere Grafen interessant, vor allem, weil die Stadt stetig wuchs, verglichen mit anderen Städten der Umgebung. Im Jahr 1166 wurde unter der Herrschaft von Graf Heinrich I. die Burg von Truppen Heinrich des Löwen nach dem Mord des Grafen an seinem Bruder erneut erobert. Als Sühne stiftete Graf Heinrich I. das Prämonstratenserstift Wedinghausen (1170/1173) in einiger Entfernung von der Stadt.
