Cetatea “Alba Carolina”, cea mai impresionantă şi cea mai vizibilă cetate bastionară de tip Vauban din Sud-Estul Europei, înglobează între zidurile sale trei fortificaţii istorice de mare valoare. . . Construirea ei este justificată de conjunctura istorică. După asediul Vienei şi înfrângerea turcilor din anul 1683, treptat, Transilvania este ocupată de trupele austriece, ultimul principe al Transilvaniei, Mihai Apafi I, murind în anul 1690. . . Cetatea “Alba Carolina”, extinsă pe aproximativ 110 ha, a fost construită în stil Vauban, între anii 1714-1738, după planurile arhitectului italian Giovanni Morando Visconti, din iniţiativa împăratului Carol VI de Habsburg. . . În anul 1714, împăratul aproba construcţia Cetăţii “Alba Carolina”, care se desfăşoara sub comanda feldmareşalului austriac de origine franceză Eugeniu de Savoia. Piatra de temelie este pusă în cadrul unei festivităţi fastuoase la 4 noiembrie 1715.. . Cetatea este un fort de forma stelară, cu ziduri groase, cu 7 bastioane şi mai multe porţi monumentale, în stil baroc, împodobite cu basoreliefuri care înfăţişeaza figuri şi scene mitologice, realizate de Johann Konig. Perimetrul şanţurilor de apărare au aproximativ 5 km.. . Pentru a face loc noii cetăţi au fost distruse mai multe construcţii, printre care şi Mitropolia Ortodoxă – ctitorie din 1595-1601 a voievodului Mihai Viteazul.. . În perioada construirii cetăţii, oraşul a fost consemnat în unele documente oficiale atât cu denumirea de Karlsburg (dupa numele împaratului Carol VI de Habsburg), cât şi cu acela de Alba Carolina.. . Construcţia cetăţii, cu momente de pauză datorate războaielor şi ciumei, este finalizata în anul 1738. . . Este datoria fiecărui român să ştie cât mai multe despre istoria poporului său, pentru că „o naţie care nu-şi cunoaşte şi respectă istoria e sortită pieirii”; iar cum Alba Iulia ocupă un loc cu totul şi cu totul special în istoria noastră, a românilor, prin trecutul său, este de la sine înţeles importanţa cunoaşterii evenimentelor care au marcat devenirea acestui loc.. .
