All services are free. Volunteers are always needed and appreciated! Adult literacy is defined as “using printed and written information to function in society, to achieve one’s goals, and to develop one’s knowledge and potential.” . (National Assessment of Adult Literacy). . VOLUNTEERS:. Adults (18+) who have the desire to tutor around 2-4 hours a week – or even a few hours a month – can make a significant impact in the Clark County community. Volunteers will tutor adults who have difficulties in basic literacy skills. The range is anywhere from learning the alphabet and letter sounds to comprehension. . Volunteers are trained to work 1-on-1 with adults who are reading below an eighth-grade reading level. Volunteers will receive a certificate after completing the tutor training. Tutors and students can meet at Clark County Literacy Council or other places in the community.. . In training, volunteers learn how to work with adults who need to read better and/or learn English as a Second Language (ESL). We mainly focus on the Laubach Way to Reading. . If you want to become an ESL tutor, you only need to know the English langauge. . . *Tutoring times are flexible to fit the tutor and student's schedule. . . STUDENTS:. Adults 18 and older.
