What We Believe.
.
About God.
God always has been and always will be.
He created life and sustains life.
He has no equal.
He exists in three distinct and equal persons: the Father, the Son and the Spirit.
This reality is often referred to as the Trinity.
.
• “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” – Genesis 1:1.
• “Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God.” – Psalm 90:2.
• “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” – Matthew 28:19.
• “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” – 2 Corinthians 13:14.
.
About Jesus.
Jesus and God are one.
Jesus has always been, and yet he lived on earth during the first century A.D.
throughout his earthly life, he was completely God and completely human.
After living a perfect, sinless life, Jesus offered himself as the perfect sacrifice for every human being who has ever lived by dying on a cross.
He remained in the grave for three days and then defeated sin and death by rising from the grave.
He ascended to heaven and will return to earth one day to reign as King.
.
• “All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: ‘Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” – Matthew 1:22-23.
• “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” – Isaiah 9:6.
• “In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He existed in the beginning with God.
God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.
The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” – John 1:1-5.
• “The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command.
When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.” – Hebrews 1:3.
• “So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe.
This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.” – Hebrews 4:14-15.
• “I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me.
Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.
He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.” – 1 Corinthians 15:3-4.
• “The Good News is about his Son.
In his earthly life he was born into King David’s family line, and he was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit.
He is Jesus Christ our Lord.” – Romans 1:3-4.
.
About the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit is an equal part of the Trinity.
He works in the world to make all people understand their need for Jesus Christ.
The Holy Spirit lives inside all followers of Jesus from the moment they begin to follow him.
The Spirit gives followers of Jesus the strength to live lives that please God.
.
• “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.
He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.
The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him.
But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.” – John 14:16-17.
• “But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come.
If I do go away, then I will send him to you.
And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.
The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me.
Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more.
Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.
There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now.
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.
He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard.
He will tell you about the future.” – John 16:7-13.
• “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.
And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” – Acts 1:8.
• “And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.” – 1 Corinthians 2:12.
• “Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?” – 1 Corinthians 3:16.
• “For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” – 2 Corinthian 3:17.
• “And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you.
And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.
The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people.
He did this so we would praise and glorify him.” - Ephesians 1:13-14.
.
About Man.
Man is the pinnacle of God’s creation and the only being on the earth made in God’s image.
Every person, although endowed with the image of God, inherited a disobedient heart from Adam, the very first man.
This disobedience, referred to in the Bible as sin, separates man from his Creator.
Apart from Jesus, man is spiritually dead.
.
• “So God created human beings in his own image.
In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” – Genesis 1:27.
• “When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers— the moon and the stars you set in place—what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor.
You gave them charge of everything you made, putting all things under their authority.” – Psalm 8:3-6.
• “All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.
We have left God’s paths to follow our own.
Yet the LORD laid on him the sins of us all.” – Isaiah 53:6.
• “It’s your sins that have cut you off from God.
Because of your sins, he has turned away and will not listen anymore.” – Isaiah 59:2.
• “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” – Romans 3:23.
• “When Adam sinned, sin entered the world.
Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.
Yes, people sinned even before the law was given.
But it was not counted as sin because there was not yet any law to break.
Still, everyone died—from the time of Adam to the time of Moses—even those who did not disobey an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did.
Now Adam is a symbol, a representation of Christ, who was yet to come.
But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift.
For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many.
But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ.
And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin.
For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins.
For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many.
But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.
Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone.
Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners.
But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous.
God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were.
But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant.
So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” – Romans 5:12-21.
.
About Salvation.
Salvation is a gift from God.
It is the only way for man to be reunited with the Creator.
Salvation cannot be earned.
Only by trusting in Jesus and God’s offer of forgiveness can man be saved from sin’s penalty of death.
Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus into his or her life by faith.
.
• “But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.” – John 1:12.
• “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.” – John 3:16-17.
• “Jesus told him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life.
No one can come to the Father except through me.’” – John 14:6.
• “Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.” – Romans 5:1.
• “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 6:23.
• “For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” – Galatians 3:26.
• “God saved you by his grace when you believed.
And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.
Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” – Ephesians 2:8-9.
• “…he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.
He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.” – Titus 3:5.
.
About the Bible.
The Bible reveals God’s character, his plans, and his purpose for our lives.
Each book was written by ordinary men who wrote under the direction of the Holy Spirit.
It can be completely trusted and is the final source of authority in our lives.
.
• “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.
It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” – 2 Timothy 3:16.
• “Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, or from human initiative.
No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.” – 2 Peter 1:20-21.
• “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you….
Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” – Psalm 119:11, 105.
• “Every word of God proves true.
He is a shield to all who come to him for protection.
Do not add to his words, or he may rebuke you and expose you as a liar.” – Proverbs 30:5-6.
.
About the Church.
The church is the body of Christ in the world today.
The members of the Church are those who trust by faith the finished work of Christ.
The mission of the church is to make disciples.
Connections Community Church personalizes this concept: Our mission is to lead the families of Montgomery County to become growing followers of Jesus.
.
• “Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.
All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.
A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders.
And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had.
They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.
They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity - all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people.
And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.” - Acts 2:41-47.
• “So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners.
You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people.
You are members of God’s family.
Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets.
And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.
We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord.
Through him you Gentiles are also being made part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit.” – Ephesian 2:19-22.
• “Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray.
Are any of you happy? You should sing praises.
Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord.
Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well.
And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.
Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.
The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” – James 5:13-16.
• “God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts.
Use them well to serve one another.” – 1 Peter 4:10.
• Also read 1 Corinthian 12.
.
About Baptism.
Baptism is the immersion of a believer into water.
It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer's faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Savior.
It illustrates the believer's death to sin, the burial of his life, and the resurrection into newness of life in Christ Jesus.
.
• “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’ I did not recognize him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.’ Then John testified, ‘I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon him.
I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.” – John 1:29-34.
• “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” – Matthew 28:19.
• “Can anyone object to their being baptized, now that they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?” So he gave orders for them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.
Afterward Cornelius asked him to stay with them for several days.” – Acts 10:47-48.
• “Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism.
And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.” – Romans 6:3-4.
.
About Communion.
Communion, or the Lord's Supper, is a symbolic act of obedience.
When taking part in this ordinance, believers memorialize the death of Jesus and anticipate his second coming.
.
• “As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it.
Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, ‘Take this and eat it, for this is my body.’ And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it.
He gave it to them and said, ‘Each of you drink from it, for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people.
It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.
Mark my words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.’ Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.” - Matthew 26:26-30.
• “For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself.
On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it.
Then he broke it in pieces and said, ‘This is my body, which is given for you.
Do this to remember me.’ In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood.
Do this to remember me as often as you drink it.’ For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.” - 1 Corinthians 11:23-26.
