El Departamento de Suelos se inició como una Unidad de Investigación y Servicio en 1953 en la Escuela Nacional de Agricultura (ENA).
Actualmente en el Edificio de Suelos se imparten las carreras de Ingeniero Agrónomo Especialista en Suelos e Ingeniero en Recursos Naturales Renovables..

Dada la necesidad de contar con personal técnico especialista en Suelos para estudiar y resolver problemas agrícolas de diversa índole como el uso y manejo de fertilizantes, salinidad, drenaje, erosión, evaluación de tierras, entre otros, se funda en 1957 la especialidad de Suelos en la Escuela Nacional de Agricultura, con la Generación 1954-1960, formándose en 4 y 5 años..

Desde el inicio de la especialidad, han egresado poco más de 1,000 Ingenieros Agrónomos especialistas en Suelos y a partir de 1998, ya están egresando Ingenieros en Planeación y Manejo de los Recursos Naturales Renovables.
En 1969, se crea la rama de Suelos del Colegio de Postgraduados, para satisfacer las necesidades de especialistas en Suelos a nivel de Posgrado.
En 1993, se crea la Carrera de Ingeniería en Planeación y Manejo de los Recursos Naturales Renovables (IPMRNR)..

En agosto de 1994, ingresa la primera generación de IPMRNR.
En 1995 se logra el registro oficial de la Carrera de IPMRNR ante la Dirección General de Profesiones.
En el 2003, se logró un aumento importante de la matrícula con respecto a años anteriores para las dos carreras: IAES en un 100% y en IRNR en un 50%; ello gracias a la participación de los coordinadores de área, maestros y alumnos..

En el 2004, se impulsan los procesos de autoevaluación y evaluación externa para lograr la certificación de las carreras de Ingeniero Agrónomo Especialista en Suelos e Ingeniero en Recursos Naturales Renovables hasta conseguir su acreditación..
