This college originally affiliated to Madras University part of Mysore State. In 1964, Central College was transferred to Bangalore University a new university formed to meet the needs of the people of Bangalore.. . The Central College Campus retained as the City Campus, houses the City offices of the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Registrar (Evaluation), Finance (Examination part), UGC Academic Staff College, Directorate of Correspondence Courses and Distance Education Centre, Directorate of College Development Council, Directorate of Physical Education and a few post graduate departments and support services, with a state of the art Jnana Jyothi Auditorium. Besides, the Central College also has the Central College Cricket Pavilion where the Karnataka State Cricket Association was first established and trained several cricketers of International repute. Apart from this, in the vicinity of the city campus, the University has the prestigious University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) started in 1917.. . The Department of Studies in Communication was established in the year 1973 with the initiative tajen by the then Vice0-Chancellor of Bangalore University Dr. H. Narasimaiah.Dr. E K Eapen, an expert in the field of Communication was invited to head this Department of Communication.A galaxy of eminent journalists and communication experts and academicians were involved in the initial stages of the development of the Department.Dr. A V Shanmugan, UNESCO consultant and professor, development communication IIM, Dr. Nateshan, UNESCO consultant on Broadcasting, Dr. H K Ranganath, UNESCO consultant in traditional media, Sri. Kuldeep Nayar, eminent journalist and former High Commissioner to Great Britain, Dr. Bashirudin, Prof of journalism and former ambassador to Qatar and Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad, Dr. A W Khan, Former Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi Open University, Prof. Satish Bahadur, Film and television Institute of India, Pune.Dr. N V K Murthy, Director, Film and Television Institute of India, Prof. N V Thirtha, Head Department of Education, Bangalore University.These eminent persons were involved in teaching and academic programs of the Department. Subsequently, Prof. B A Shridhara, Prof Leela Rao, Sri. Ramesh and Prof. Balasubramaniam joined as faculty members of the Department. Later, Prof. H S Eshwara PhD from the Univeristy of Wisconsin who had earlier worked at Mysore University succeeded Dr. Eapen as the Chairman of the department. Subsequently, Prof. B A Shridhara, Prof. K Puttaraju, Prof. Leela Rao served as the Chairpersons of the Department and at present Prof. Jagadeesh Prakash is the Chairman of the department.The department was the first to recognise the growth of Television in India and the first and foremost department to have developed CCTV facilities to train the students in the production of Television and Radio programs.The department was encouraged by the UGC with the sanction of six posts of Readers to expand Six independent specialized branches of communication with the concept of establishing a School of Communication viz., Journalism, Satellite Communication, Communication Policy and Planning, Advertising and Public Relations, Rural Communication and Communication Research.. . In the present world of fast changing technology, particularly in the field of television medium, training of students to cope with the new trends and developments, especially with job opportunities, has assumed great importance. Keeping this changing scenario in mind Bangalore University, for the first time in the country, started a two years' unique Post Graduate Programme in Electronic Media (EM) in the year 2002-03. In the past five years the department has successfully trained four batches of students and almost all the passed out students have been awarded placement in the television industry, Production Houses, and in FM Radio stations.
