In the nineteenth century, America saw the raid growth of mutual aid societies throughout all sectors of society, including both the native born and immigrants. For immigrants, the mutual aid society provided a familiar setting where their dialect was spoken and Old World customs recreated. They were characterized by the provincial and village ties that were present in Italy. While many of them had belonged to such organizations in their native land, in America - the mutual aid societies became more widespread as settings for social interaction, sickness and death benefits. Therefore, these societies were indispensable in assisting immigrants to adjust to urban industrial life.. . So, the idea of uniting the Italians in one great organization, which would enable them to become authorities of their own destinies and progress, came to Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro around 1904. Despite the obstacles put in his way by the various presidents and heads of the many mutual aid societies and other associations - with the help of his trusted friends, who were rather skeptical of its success, he still proceeded to organize the Italian immigrant population.. . It was on June 22, 1905 that the first act of incorporation took place and the organization became known as the “Supreme Lodge of the Sons of Italy.” It was their desire to attract and exert a great impact on fellow Italian immigrants, most of who were single and uncultured folks, in that Dr. Sellaro introduced a fraternal organization with a ritual ceremony, altar and officers. In his inaugural address, Dr. Sellaro closed his speech with: “Today I have a dream and a hope that someday, even if it takes a hundred more years before we are fully accepted, our children and their children, even if they carry a single drop of Italian blood, will be able and proudly continue to carry on our traditions, our culture, and our language. It is up to us and what we do today.”. . The Order from the very day of its birth was, and always has been, loyal to its non-political and non-denominational beliefs. The first official meeting took place on June 29, 1905 and on this occasion it was decided to form the first Supreme Executive Council. Today, a plaque is close to the very sight that the first meeting took place at 203 Grand Street in New York City. It was at this meeting that each member of this council obligated himself to form a lodge and in two years 14 lodges were formed. Over the years, the prestige of the Order increased and a greater sense of trust was felt by those members who regarded the Order as “their association” or “la Societa” because it expressed their aspirations and discharged their anxieties.. . There are approximately 70,000 members across America and Canada, male and female and a sizable social and fraternal membership in 700 local lodges. The Order Sons of Italy in America remains the largest and most geographically representative organization of Italians and Italian Americans in the United States.. . ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦. . On July 22, 1984, the Donatello Lodge #2559 of Westbury was instituted as a co-ed lodge in New York State. The founders were Charles Fuschillo, Sr., Carmen Monteforte and Caroline Allocca. The first president of the lodge was Salvatore A. Lanzilotta, Sr. Many of our village residents became members to hear more about the functions of the Order Sons of Italy and some joined to fight the bias and bigotry which unfortunately still exists. . . The lodge is very active in the Village of Westbury. We have contributed to the Senior Citizens, Westbury Fire Department, and St. Brigid’s Church, adopt a family for Thanksgiving and Christmas and other local charities. In addition to our community work we also support Cooley’s Anemia, the Gift of Sight, Alzheimer’s, Autism and scholarships in our lodge and throughout New York State. . . We hold a dinner dance every year for scholarships and also fashion shows, heritage nights, pasta nights and other social functions.. . The lodge holds a meeting the first Wednesday of every month.
