DFC's mission is to be a long-term intervention coalition committed to reducing and preventing substance abuse in Selma, Alabama. The Drug-Free Communities Program (DFC) is a Federal grant program that provides well-needed funding to community-based coalitions that organize to prevent substance abuse within youths. On May 22, 1997, the Drug Free Communities Act passed House & Senate amendments and later became an active Law on June 27, 1997. Since then, DFC has funded more than 2,000 coalitions and currently mobilizes 9,000+ community volunteers across the United States. The philosophy behind the DFC Program is that: ‘local drug problems require local solutions’. . . As such, with Federal investments, the DFC Program doubles the amount of funding through Program match requirement, to address substance abuse among youths. Recent evaluation data indicates that where DFC dollars are invested, the use of substance abuse in youths is lower than average. Moreover, throughout the life of the DFC Program, youths living in DFC assisted communities have experienced significant reductions in alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana usage. . .
