The fort was constructed during the Vijayanagara rule. In 1690, the Keladi ruler Shivappa Nayak captured it and named it Basavarajadurga in memory of the Keladi Prince Basavaraja.. Kasarkod Boating Center: Ideal place for backwater boating, mangrove trail and bird watching. Mangroves are generally salt tolerant plants growing in the swampy mud of coastal areas. They grow in intertidal zones of river mouth, lagoons and creeds which form the estuaries where river water mixes with seawater.. Ramathirtha is another beautiful location in Honavar. It is on the Honavar - Chandavar road about 3 km away. This pushkarini or water tank which is 50 steps below the ground level is very spacious. The water from a height falls into the tank from two points called Ramathirtha and Laxmanthirtha. According to local traditions, Sri Rama, Sita and Laxman had a holy dip in the tank during their exile.. Higund Island: Higund is a beautiful island in River Sharavathi just before it joins the Arabian Sea. Three kilometres on the Honavar – Bangalore National Highway brings you along this island.
