Esenler, 18 mahalleden oluşmaktadır ve yüzölçümü toplam 5.227 hektardır.Esenler, çevresindeki ilçelerden farklı olarak, sanayi merkezi olmaktan çok bir yerleşim merkezi özelliğindedir. Esenler'i Davutpaşa yoluna bağlayan Ayazma yolu üzerindeki su kontrol kuyuları, şimdi Belediye oto Garajı olarak kullanılan Üçyüzlü, Ayazma Çeşmesi, Su Terazisi ve garaj içinde yıkık vaziyette olan Kilise güzel bir mimari örnek olarak karşımıza çıkar. Esenler Merkez Camisi'nin karşısındaki Kilise kalıntısı restore edilerek günümüzde Dijital Kütüphane olarak hizmet vermektedir. İstanbul surlarının yıkılmasından sonra bu bölge toprakları askeri bakımdan önem kazanmıştır. İlçe Tarihinin İstanbul Tarihi içinde mütalaa edilmesi gerekir. İlçe tarihi eser bakımından zengin sayılmaz. Bizans ve Osmanlı dönemine ait çeşme, su kemeri, su terazisi ve sebil günümüze ulaşan tarihi yapılardır. Bu eserlerin de kitabeleri tahrip edildiği için yapım tarihleri hakkında bilgi vermek mümkün değildir. Bunlar: Avas kemeri, Atışalanı Çeşmesi, Atışalanı Sebili, Menderes Çeşmesi (Litros Ayazması), Yavuz Selim Çeşmesi ve Nene Hatun Çeşmesi.TarihçeBölge, Bizanslılardan kalma bir yerleşim alanıdır. Bu bölgenin en eski ahalisi Litros, (Esenler) ve Avas (Atışalanı) adlarıyla kurulan köylerde yaşayan Rumlardır. Esenler veya Atışalanı Köyleri eski tarihlerde Bizans'ın şaşalı devirlerinde İstanbul'un Türk'ler tarafından fethine kadar Bizans köyleri olup, Bizans İmparatorluğu'na türlü tarım ürünleri yetiştirerek ekonomik katkıda bulunmuşlardır.Osmanlı döneminde Mahmutbey nahiyesi içerisinde birer Rum yerleşim yeri olan Litros ve Avas köylerinin etnik yapısı, Lozan Antlaşması'yla değişmiştir. Cumhuriyet döneminde Rum kökenli halkın Yunanistan'a göç etmesiyle boşalan köylere, Doğu Makedonya'dan gelen mübadele göçmenlerini Türkler iskan ettirilmiştir. Uzun yıllar mübadele köyü konumunda kalan Litros ve Avas isimlerini 1930'lu yıllara kadar korumuştur. 1937-1940 yıllarında gerçekleştirilen değişiklikle Litros-Esenler, Avas-Atışalanı olarak Türkçeleştirilmiştir.
