Esenyurt, İstanbul'un Büyükçekmece ilçesinin semtlerinden biriyken, 2008 yılında Kıraç beldesi ile birleştirilerek ilçe olmuştur.Esenyurt yerleşim yeri bütünü, Marmara bölgesinin Trakya alt bölgesinde, İstanbul Metropolitan alan sınırları içerisinde yer almaktadır.
Bu bölgenin doğusunda Küçükçekmece Gölü, batısında Büyükçekmece, kuzeyinde Hoşdere mahallesi ve TEM Karayolu, güneyinde Firuzköy ve E-5 Karayolu bulunmaktadır.İlçede 13 sağlık ocağı 1 devlet hastanesi 1 kızılay hastanesi (kızılay hastanesi devlet hastanesi ek binası haline getirilmiştir) ve 1.000.000.
m² şehir parkı bulunmaktadır.
İlçede güvenlik 1 haziran 2009 itibarıyla polis teşkilatına geçmiştir.
Emniyet müdürlüğü binası hazırlanmıştır.Esenyurt'un yüzölçümü 2.770 hektardır ve 1989 yılında belediye olma niteliği kazanmıştır.

yüzyılın başlarında Ekrem Ömer Paşa'ya ait çiftlik toprağında kurulan yerleşme, buranın hissedarlarından olan Eşkinozgillerden Eşkinoz adını almıştır.1967'de de yerleşimin adı Esenyurt olarak değiştirilmiştir.
Eşkinoz Çiftliği'nde çalışanların oluşturduğu yerli halka 1920-1938 yıllarında Romanya ve Bulgaristan'dan göçenlerin katılımı ve son yıllarda iç ve dış göçlerle gelen nüfus, etnik yapının bugünkü halini almasını sağlamıştır.Esenyurt‘un kurucu belediye başkanı Gürbüz Çapan‘dır.
Şu an belediye başkanlığı görevini AK Parti grubundan Necmi Kadıoğlu sürdürmektedir.
İlk yerleşim, Merkez Mahallesi'nde Köyiçi Mevkiinde oluşmuştur.
