Dazu gehört die theologische Fakultät der kurfürstlichen Universität, die im Jahre 1477 gegründet wurde und zwischenzeitlich eine der größten theologischen Fakultäten in Europa war.
Möglichkeiten zum Theologiestudium blieben auch in der Zeit zwischen der Auflösung der alten und der Wiedergründung der neuen Mainzer Universität erhalten, weshalb die Theologie ein wichtiges historisches Bindeglied zwischen alter und neuer Universität darstellt.
Zu diesen theologischen Traditionen gehört aber auch die Mainzer Talmudschule, die Teil des reichen intellektuellen Lebens der sogenannten SCHUM-Städte Mainz, Worms und Speyer im Mittelalter war.
Seit 1946 besteht die Evangelisch-Theologische Fakultät in ihrer gegenwärtigen Rechtsform als einzige rheinland-pfälzische Ausbildungsstätte für das Pfarramtsstudium und für die Ausbildung für das gymnasiale Lehramt in Abstimmung und Kooperation mit den drei evangelischen Landeskirchen im Land Rheinland-Pfalz..

Aktuell sind sämtliche theologische Disziplinen an unserer Fakultät vertreten und diesen Anforderungen und Traditionen verpflichtet, darunter auch eine Professur für Judaistik.
Neben den hauptamtlichen Dozentinnen und Dozenten engagieren sich gegenwärtig rund 30 Lehrbeauftragte für die Fakultät – häufig ehrenamtlich – und sorgen für ein reichhaltiges Lehrprogramm in deutscher und englischer Sprache, das auch international keinen Vergleich scheuen muss.
