F.M.Welfare Club is a Non Government Voluntary Organisation registered under the S.R.Act of 1860 as a non profitable organisation dedicated to serve the people since 1992 in areas of sustainable development, sanitation, women empowerment, promotion of Human Rights and many other challenging areas for a decent living on the part of the common man. . . This particular Project- “NIRMAL PURI” is intended to keep the pilgrim city of international repute clean and ensure proper hygeinic condition for the inhabitants of the city in general and the pilgrims & tourists in particular.The project was initiated in the year 2005 with financial support from the UNDP,GEF,SGP. The project, first of its kind in the Puri district of Odisha ran successfully till 2011 when the Puri Municipality came forward to extend cooperation through financial & technical support. At present the project covers four wards of Puri Municipality area with 600 stakeholders in addition to 118 hotels,28 mathas,8 temples,246 shops, and 127 households as per the demand of the public and the encouragement received from different quarters it is proposed to expand the project through the whole city and give the maximum of the people in keeping the pilgrim city ever clean. . . The key focus in the project is to foster confidence in community based sustainable Solid Waste Management Programme and check the burning of waste and in particular plastic and toxic wastes.. . Project Result. . 1. The solid waste dumped at a place specified by the Puri Municipality, and the Municipality after recycling and reprocessing of solid waste, sells the byproduct as bio-friendly manure at a cheaper rate.. . 2. Regular meetings between different stakeholders have led to developing an attitude towards sustainable waste management practices. People have started adopting segregation of waste, timely payment and collection of waste.. . 3. Adequate care is taken in getting the involvement of women in the waste management practices.. . 4. Project has facilitated the formation of 2 SHGs involving Safai Sathis.. . 5. Ban on polythene bags for milk and flowers in 8 temples.The NGO has been able to influence the local temple authorities to issue circulars and ensure no use of plastics.. . 6. In 65% of the source, segregation of garbage has started.The NGO has put in a great effort in making people understand the basic ethics of segregation of waste at doorstep/at source.. . 7. In the collection areas the burning of waste has been checked.This has resulted in reduction of CO2 and Green House Gases(GHGs).. . 8. Quick disposal of waste has also led to checking the release of (GHGs). This has influenced the temples & locals from other areas to adopt the same approaches.The NGO has succeed in approaching the local municipal corporation on regular basis to create the links.. . 9. Nearly 120-150 K.Gs of plastic waste is being collected daily.. . 10. Insurance coverage of Safai Sathis & regular health check up.. . Future Agenda. . 1. To include & involve the entire city of Puri consisting of 32 wards & 2.5 lakhs of people of about 40,000 households of Puri in the process of community based Solid Waste Management Programme.. . 2. Replicate similar model in other areas of Puri district.. . 3. Establish a Paper & Plastic recycling unit.. . 4. Establish a unit for mechanical disposal of night soil.. . 5. Conversion of solid waste to bio friendly manure through vermin composting.. . 6. Promoting SHGs and ensure their economic sustainability through linkages with banks and other agencies in the execution of poverty alleviation programme.. . 7. To keep the city ever clean & green to attract more tourist & pilgrims as an income generation device for the people dependant on the system.. . 8. Establish a unit to produce sanitary products by women Safai Sathis and market them.. . 9. Education for children of Safai Sathis.. . 10.Establish a system for keeping regular cleaning of 5 K.Ms of Puri Beach.
