Detailed description is Government College of Engineering & Textile Technology, Serampore is one of the pioneer institutions in India in the field of Engineering and Technology. The beginning of the history of this college goes back to the early part of the 20th century. The textile industry was established in India in the middle of 19th century. The urgent need for trained technical personnel to drive that was felt in Bengal which led to establishing the institution. Government College of Engineering and Textile Technology Serampore was established in 1908 as Government Central Weaving Institute with a two year certificate course in weaving in a rented house in Serampore. Mr. E. Hooghewarf was the first principal. It is the second oldest textile institute in India, only after VJTI, Mumbai. A separate women's section was opened in 1926. The present building was constructed in 1930 on a sprawling five acres campus on the bank of the river Hooghly. In 1938, a 3 year diploma course in textile technology was started which was upgraded to degree course in 1957 under the affiliation of Calcutta University. The Institution was renamed as College of Textile Technology Serampore, which was subsequently changed to its present name in 2005.. [edit]Present status. . . . Administrative building. The institute's thrust on developing itself as an institute of excellence led to significant changes in the curriculum and upgrading of infrastructure. Over the last few years the college has grown into a multi-disciplinary institute with a number of undergraduate and post graduate courses. Presently, courses available are:. BTech in Textile Technology. BTech in Computer Science and Engineering. BTech in Information Technology. BTech in Apparel Production and Management. M.Tech in Chemical Processing Of Textiles , Textile Technology. [edit]Computer science and information technology departments. . . . CSE and IT department buildings. The Computer Science and Engineering Department and Information Technology Department were formed in 2001 and 2000 respectively. Due to the formation of West Bengal University of Technology, the Serampore Textile College incorporated in its curriculum the CSE and IT departments and changed its name to the present name. The CSE and IT departments share all the labs as the subjects are very similar to each other. Laboratories include electronics, microprocessors, communication engineering, various software labs (operating systems, database management systems (DBMS), media, control and systems simulation), basic programming (subjects like Java, World Wide Web, Artificial Intelligence, and others, are practiced in these labs by sharing) software projects. The physics lab, chemistry lab, and mechanical workshop and electrical workshop, are shared among all departments. There are an adequate number of highly qualified teachers in the departments. In 2005, the college was selected to receive financial assistance under World Bank aided Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP) among 11 engineering colleges in West Bengal. This helped the college to make substantial developments in the infrastructure and facilities. Academic collaboration with foreign universities of repute began with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for Joint Research and Academic Activities with the University of Manchester, UK; Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic; and ITECH Lyon University France..
