A história do Hospital São José teve início no dia 28 de julho de 1902, com a vinda das Irmãs da Alemanha, onde atualmente está situada a Polônia. Ivoti, naquela época, nomeada como Bom Jardim, pertencia à cidade de São Leopoldo.. As Irmãs vieram com o objetivo de assumir a educação na escola paroquial e a saúde domiciliar. Para realizarem os atendimentos aos enfermos em suas residências, faziam o trajeto a pé ou a cavalo. Como não haviam médicos na época, ofereciam o atendimento espiritual e fitoterápico.. Percebendo a necessidade de estrutura para melhor atendimento dos pacientes, sendo que o atendimento domiciliar durou 34 anos. Em janeiro de 1936, a escola foi transformada em hospital, inicialmente com cinco quartos, dezesseis leitos e uma sala cirúrgica.. O nome da Instituição originou-se pela doação de uma estátua de São José que o Sr. Carlos Schneck doou à Capela do Hospital.. O Hospital visava atender pacientes que não podiam deslocar-se por falta de recursos. Em 1937 foi construída uma nova sede, concluída em 1938, que contava com vinte leitos. Atualmente a Instituição possui 50 leitos hospitalares.
