Anfänglich ein Institut für die Theorie und Geschichte des Sozialismus und der Arbeiterbewegung, wandelte sich die inhaltliche Ausrichtung unter der Leitung von Max Horkheimer zu einem Programm, um das sich Intellektuelle wie Theodor W. Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Erich Fromm, Otto Kirchheimer, Leo Löwenthal, Herbert Marcuse, Franz Neumann, Friedrich Pollock und andere versammelten und das später als »Kritische Theorie der Frankfurter Schule« bezeichnet wurde. Im Frühjahr 1933 geschlossen, gelang es, das Institut an die Columbia University nach New York zu verlegen. 1951 kehrte es nach Frankfurt zurück. Seither wird sein Grundhaushalt durch das Land Hessen und die Stadt Frankfurt, die Forschungstätigkeit ausschließlich durch Drittmittel finanziert.. . Verantwortlicher Träger des IfS ist – 1951 vom Hessischen Ministerium des Innern genehmigt und als gemeinnützig anerkannt – die Stiftung »Institut für Sozialforschung«. Der Stiftungsrat setzt sich aus Vertreter_innen des Landes Hessen, der Stadt Frankfurt, der Goethe-Universität, des Kollegiums, der Mitarbeiter_innen des IfS, dem Direktor sowie vom Stiftungsrat selbst gewählten Mitgliedern zusammen.. . Ziel der gegenwärtigen Institutsarbeit ist es, die breitgefächerte sozialwissenschaftliche und sozialphilosophische Forschung im übergreifenden Forschungsprogramm »Paradoxien der kapitalistischen Modernisierung« zu bündeln und zu einem kritischen Verständnis des gesellschaftlichen Strukturwandels beizutragen. Dieses seit 2001 verfolgte Programm hat den Charakter einer Rahmenthese oder einer analytischen Perspektive, die weder die Vielfalt der Themen noch die am Institut praktizierte Methodenvielfalt einschränken soll.
