Es handelt sich um eine plurizentrische Sprache.Erstmals wurde dieser Begriff im Jahr 1824 von Jacob Grimm im Vorwort seiner Übersetzung der Kleinen Serbischen Grammatik von Vuk Stefanović Karadžić erwähnt. Einige Jahre später, 1836, wurde dieser Ausdruck erneut vom Philologen Jernej Kopitar in einem Brief benutzt.
