İlk amatör tiyatro oyunu, Vefa Lisesi'nde okurken rol aldığı "Zoraki tabip"tir. Kenterler, Ulvi Araz, Ayfer Feray ve son olarak Devekuşu Kabare Tiyatrosu'nda profesyonel olarak rol aldıktan sonra Ertem Eğilmez'in kendisini fark etmesiyle, 1972 yılında Tatlı Dillim filminde rol alarak sinemaya ilk adımını atmıştır. Filmlerinde oynadığı "iyi, saf adam" rolleriyle beğeni kazanmıştır. Sanatçı, komedi filmleri ağırlıkta olsa da, dram türündeki filmlerde de rol almıştır. Oynadığı filmlerdeki karakterlerin genel özelliği haksızlıkların karşısında duran, iyiliği ve saflığı yüzünden başına sürekli iş açılan, zekasıyla kötülerle mücadele eden ve insanlara doğru yolu gösteren, daima "gülen" adamdır. Kendisini "çok az konuşan, çok soğuk bir adamım" diyerek tanımlayan Kemal Sunal'ın sinema izleyicileri tarafından benimsenmesi ve sevilmesinin en büyük sebeplerinden birisi, filmlerin çekildiği dönemlerde yaşanan sosyolojik-sosyo ekonomik ve siyasi gelişmelerin filmlerinde yer almasıdır. Aynı zamanda Kemal Sunal, öğretmenden bekçiye, kapıcılıktan çöpçüye kadar birçok karakteri oynayarak, beğeni kazanmıştır. Yüksek lisansını "TV ve sinemada Kemal Sunal güldürüsü" isimli tezi ile yapmıştır. 82 filmde rol almış sanatçının son filmi 1999 yılında vizyona giren Propagandadır. 3 Temmuz 2000 tarihinde, Balalayka isimli filmin çekimleri için bindiği uçakta, kalp krizi geçirerek hayatını kaybetmiştir.
