Detailed description is The Los Angeles County School of Nursing Alumni Association was established in 1912 and incorporated by the State of California on August 1, 1918.
HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE.
.
The College Training School for Nurses, established in 1895, produced its first 8 trained nurses two years later.
The students worked 12-hour days at the hospital, with half a day off per week, and attended lectures in the evenings.
The first male graduates made it in 1904, and the first full-time nursing instructor was hired in 1912.
In 1914, the first state nursing boards exams were held -- and all graduates of the Los Angeles Hospital Training School for Nurses (as it was now known) passed.
Students at the LA campus helped to push patients' beds through the long tunnel from the old hospital to the new in 1933, and the school moved into the beautiful white building on the hill, too..
.
By then a 3-year program, the Los Angeles General Hospital School of nursing sent entire classes to support World War II as Cadet Nurses, and the student body grew to over 500, admitted in three classes per year.
The school got its own 9-story building in 1962 -- Muir Hall held classrooms, dormitories, a clinic, and administration offices...
only to be damaged beyond repair in the 1994 earthquake and torn down to make room for the new Diagnostic and Clinic Tower and its parking lot..
.
In 1970, nursing caps became optional at the Medical Center, but hung on at the school until the class of 1991-II became the last to be ceremoniously "capped." Faced with repeated threats of closure throughout the previous decades, the diploma program became the Los Angeles College of Nursing and Allied Health in its centenary year, granting its own Associate Degree in Nursing.
As the new hospital was being built, the classrooms, library, and offices moved down the hill to Mission Road and Griffin/Zonal, where the College now occupies another set of buildings (the oldest built in the 1921 for the College of Osteopathic Surgeons) and student nursing became another memory..
.
