Tanuku’s history goes back to ancient Vedic times.

o mythology, the Tarakapuri kingdom, ruled by the Asura king Tarakasena had his capital here in Tanuku.
It was named after him and used to be called Tarakapura.
Tarkasena is often referred to as Tarakasura ("Taraka" + "Asura").
