Detailed description is Empowering Indigenous Youth of North East Arnhem Land. The “Marrma’ Rom (Two Worlds) Foundation” is a leadership program for boys from Yirrkala and North East Arnhem Land.. . The Marrma’ Rom Foundation Committee, consisting of Elders from Yirrkala Community, selected four boys to move down to Geelong to live with Melissa Patterson and Cam Begg. Yirrkala is an Aboriginal Community near Gove in North East Arnhem Land. It is a very strong community with a proud history. Many important Aboriginal leaders have come form this area, notably the former Australia of the Year and lead singer of Yothu Yindi Mandawuy Yunupingu, and his older brother Galarrwuy Yunupingu AM. . . Yirrmal Marika, Marradakthun Marika, Nonggunu Wanambi and Dimathaya Burarrwanga flew down to Geelong on April 21. Melissa and Cam are currently renovating the downstairs double garage into a ‘teenagers retreat’ complete with bathroom, washing machine, cooking facilities etc., however currently the boys are staying upstairs with them; one big happy family!. . After the initial culture shock, the boys are settling in to the routines of living down south. They are well supported, but will have to develop ‘life skills’ in order to survive in the 'Western World'. They will have to shop for themselves, cook their own dinner, make lunches, wash clothes and clean their flat. They will become independent.. . Three of the boys have been given scholarships to attend St. Josephs College in Geelong. Yirrmal, Marradakthun and Dimathaya will go to school 5 days a week. Dima is in the year 10 Ad Alta program, and Yirrmal and Marradakthun, or Muz, are in the year 11 VCAL program. They are working hard to improve their literacy and numeracy, as well as undertaking classes in more practical based subjects like Outdoor Education, Conservation and Land Management, and Wood Work.. . Nonggunu has enrolled in a Certificate 2 Conservation and Land Management program with National Green Jobs Corps at Diversitat in Geelong. He is out in the field 3 days a week and in the classroom on a Thursday; still developing his literacy and numeracy, but also learning work skills. Nonggunu also works as a groundsman with Des at St. Josephs on a Friday. . . All the boys are keen footballers. They have joined St. Marys in the under 18 competition. The cold and wet conditions are challenging, but they are adapting their playing style to suit the wet ball, and are starting to thrill the spectators with their speed and skill.. . The Marrma’Rom Foundation is a leadership program for 15 – 17 year old boys from Yirrkala, who have already shown a commitment to education. It is an important opportunity for the young men to experience Western Culture, develop their leadership skills, and slowly they will learn to ‘walk in two worlds.’ The candidates have been selected because they have already displayed leadership ability in Yirrkala. These young men will be leaders in their community in the future. They will live in Geelong for the rest of the school year, returning home for holidays. Hey will have to fully commit to the program for at least a year in order to begin to walk in two worlds.. . The Marrma' Rom Foundation is a Not For Profit Charitable Organisation with a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. The Foundation is yet to find funding, and is operating on savings and Centrelink payments.
