Detailed description is Morocco is my new love and I want it to be yours too....
When my husband Bruce passed, in 2006, after a thirty year love affair, I took a journey, as a single woman, to explore a new chapter in my life.
I'd written 22 best-selling healthy eating cookbooks, a motivation book, run restaurants and been a figure on the lucrative speaker's circuit, but life changed.
For thirty years my love story was extraordinary.
My wounded heart begged me not to let such extra-ordinariness become diminished by perceptions of loss.
Travel became my new sustenance.
.
.
I found healing in lessons learned along new roads as I explored and tasted never before visited cultures, had conversations with strangers, embraced silence and contemplated the wonder of a world once big to me that was suddenly small, inviting, and accessible.
I journaled observations and gratitude’s sipping coffee in quaint cafes and drinking red wine in quirky bars listening to my library of Spotify music and the stories of others.
I lingered on spectacular sunsets and rose at sunrise.
I loved the fact that there was no language barrier in laughter.
Instantly, I fell in love with the sound a zipper makes on a suitcase.
The click of a camera became my new music.
.
.
Not wanting to stagnate in mind, body or spirit, movement became my new dance.
I read departure and arrival boards at airports like most read a new novel.
I can’t imagine life without soaking up the smells and colors of civilizations thousands-of-years-old, devouring cuisines that define a destination and finding the lessons of life in conversations with strangers of all ages.In the beginning, before my small steps became quantum leaps of faith into my new chapter, I was drawn to travel to Dubrovnik ─ a city reborn from grief and redefined by the lessons and scars of a turbulent period of war.
A destination with a thousand stories and just as many lessons, all were seemingly written and waiting just for me.
Dubrovnik redefined my spirit and so I have returned there every year since 2006.
.
.
But the call to live life and be everything that I was born to be led me further.
I traveled the length of Italy, getting lost in piazzas, throwing coins in a fountain, touching the walls of Roman ruins; eating delicious pizza and pasta, and drinking Bellini's in Rome.
I momentarily drew breath in Orvieto, a hilltop town that epitomizes the quintessential beauty of places for which postcards are famous before I felt the rush of horse hooves pounding the Piazza del Campo in a Palio di Siena.
A train sped me fast from Florence to Ferrara, stopping briefly to attend the world’s biggest Busker’s Festival there before I was captivated by a life lived on canals, waving hello to serenading gondoliers, and devouring a dish called 'Sarde in Saor' (sweet and savory sardines).
Italy got me excited about life once more.I accepted an invitation to sail the waters south of Tasmania and learned the basics of sailing.
It opened the doors to sail in Sardinia and a seed was planted.
In Paris (city of love), I dared to ask my entitlements - "Could I expect more than one love story, in one lifetime." Paris didn't disappoint..
.
So far, my travels have taken me across France, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Greece, Turkey, Sardinia, Spain, Portugal, Caribbean, USA, New Caledonia and United Arab Emirates.
My best memories are invested in Dubrovnik, Paris, Marseille, Barcelona, Madrid, Alaska, New York, Santiago de Compostela, Hvar, Korcula and Mostar.
.
.
More recently, I was called to Morocco to unlock the reasons of my father's passion for this country and to more understand his bedtime stories about the great horse riders of the Sahara.
Over four separate visits I've traveled more than 5000km across a magical world of the exotic.
I have covered the wild and rugged Atlantic Coast with its ancient white-washed walled cities built on the sea and touched the high peaks of the Atlas Mountains, before being delivered into the burning heart of the Sahara.
In Morocco’s 4 Imperial Cities of Fez, Marrakech, Meknes and Rabat I've discovered a diverse history and an incomparable culture..
.
Morocco is my new love affair.
.
.
At my BLOGS by THE INDEPENDENT WOMAN TRAVELLER AMBASSADOR at www.juliestafford.com.au it's my desire to share the size of my love of travel with you to inspire and encourage you too, to travel.
It doesn't matter how far and in which direction.
I just want you to get off the usual, every day, regular path you might be on and taste the lessons in travel...do it by yourself, for yourself, because that's where your biggest lessons and joys wait for you..
