Our herd consists of around 70 registered breeders whose progeny have been performance tested since 1995.

We use the performance of our progeny as the measure of the success of our breeding program.
It is our belief that to guarantee our bulls our females have to meet our criteria.
All our cows are expected to calve by 24 months and to have a calf every year after that so we mate our heifers at 14 months to our stud bull.
If the heifers can’t deliver a live calf from our best bull then we want to know about it and cull accordingly..

This policy has been implemented for many years and as a consequence the fertility of our herd is very good.
We have two matings a year, autumn and spring, restricting the bull to 12 weeks with the cows.
Ideally we would like to reduce this to 7 weeks but as AI is used regularly it does interfere with the calving spread..

The end result of this approach is a herd of Red Poll cattle with 365 days to calving, well above average Breedplan EBV’s, producing extremely fertile females and bulls.
Breedplan has helped us identify the best performers and through selection superior bulls and females..

We have been developing our herd at Jamestown since 1982 on 700 acres of prime cropping and dryland Lucerne country.
We run the stud with a cropping program that includes Lucerne and hay, to renovate paddocks and spread our income.
