Situé dans un bel hôtel pastelier du 16e siècle, le musée de l’hôtel d’Ardouin propose de revisiter l’histoire de Mazères du Néolithique à nos jours. Cet hôtel est bordé par un jardin fait dans l’esprit de la Renaissance (plantes médicinales, potagères, topiaires). Une salle d’exposition présente la culture du pastel et son histoire. Des reproductions d’armes médiévales sont exposées dans le jardin.. Le musée propose une exposition permanente « Barbares en Gaule du Sud ». Elle présente les objets issus des fouilles de la nécropole mérovingienne de Bénazet (5e-8e siècle). Le visiteur est appelé à devenir un apprenti archéologue afin de découvrir quelles étaient les personnes qui ont été enterrées là, voici environ 1500 ans. Comment vivaient-elles ? Quel était leur quotidien ? Quelle était leur croyance ? Comment sont-elles mortes ?. Cette exposition « Barbares en Gaule du Sud » répond à toutes ces questions et à bien d’autres encore !. La visite se poursuit ensuite avec l’histoire de Mazères du Moyen-Age central jusqu’au 19e s. (avec la fondation de l’abbaye de Boulbonne, la création de la bastide de Mazères, l’évocation de Gaston Fébus, des guerres de Religion et les modifications architecturales du 19e siècle).. .
