It was the only institution in Victoria to have been constructed specifically for child migrants. From 1937 to 1958, the Northcote Farm School received a total of 273 child migrants. From 1937 to 1976, it was run by a committee of management (the Northcote Trust). In 1976, administration of the school was taken over by the Social Welfare Department. Children were then housed in cottages in a campus setting. It was closed by the Department in 1979 after all the abuse and brutallity that was given to most of the the children. Funds were redirected to replacement family group homes and to support other regional family service programs.. .
