Com área de aproximadamente 2.004 hectares, a Unidade de Conservação (UC) está situada ao norte da região metropolitana de Belo Horizonte, alcançando os municípios de Lagoa Santa e Pedro Leopoldo.. Gerenciado pelo Instituto Estadual de Florestas (IEF), o Parque Estadual do Sumidouro é caracterizado como Unidade de Proteção Integral, o que significa preservar toda natureza e demais riquezas, sem a permissão do uso direto dos recursos naturais. Ao todo são cadastradas no Parque 53 cavernas e 157 sítios arqueológicos. Caracterizada como uma região cárstica, a unidade possui um belo conjunto de lagoas, surgências, sumidouros, um relevo composto por paredões, torres, além de suas belas grutas. A UC ainda é composta por fauna, flora e registros de memória cultural de grande riqueza. .
