A iniciativa de fundação do clube surgiu após os empresários Constantino Paiva e Joaquim Martins Leal, em excursão a Santos (SP), terem conhecido a Associação Atlética Portuguesa desta cidade.. . Os empresários do ramo de sacos vazios e usados disputaram, com seus colegas e empregados, uma partida de futebol amistosa com os representantes santistas desse ramo. O jogo terminou empatado em 1 a 1.. . Na volta ao Rio, resolveram se organizar para um “jogo contra”. Portanto, em 17 de dezembro de 1924, Luiz Souza Gomes e um grupo de negociantes e empregados no ramo de sacos vazios e usados propuseram a criação de um clube também chamado Associação Atlética Portuguesa.. . A Portuguesa também teve as suas façanhas internacionais, pois em 1956 fez uma excursão para a União Soviética, onde enfrentou o Dínamo Moscou e o Dínamo Tiblissi, mas a grande façanha foi derrotar o Real Madrid por 2 a 1, em Madrid, no Santiago Bernabeu. Outro momento histórico ocorreu em 1976, quando a Portuguesa se sagrou campeã do Torneio Internacional Otávio Pinto Guimarães, ao ganhar do Benfica de Portugal na final realizada no Estádio São Januário, no Rio de Janeiro.. .
